Probably the most naturally gifted player to so far grace the Premiership, and the jewel in the crown during his time at The Dell. Matt Le Tissier gained just eight England caps (including only 2 starts), and never really got the full chance to prove himself at international level. He was ignored under Terry Venerables for Euro96, and then left behind by Glenn Hoddle (a self confessed Le Tissier fan) for France98. Scorer of spectacular goals with his stunning shot, excellent close control and ability to fool defenders with the unexpected. His value to Southampton is virtually immeasurable.

On the 21st April, Matt scored a great hat-trick for England B, and with his timely return to premiership form gave himself a good chance of making the final squad (announced on 2nd June) for France98 starting on the 10th June.
However, even after Matt's great game for England B, Glen has not picked Matt in the squad of 30 for the final pre-world cup fixtures. Surely this is a mistake, and I'm not alone in thinking this.
On the 1st June, the final world cup squad was announced, and with no Gazza, Glen must surely be regretting his premature decision to axe Le Tiss.
After the squad was announced there is a lot of sympathy for Gazza, but at least he had a fair chance. Matt has had only two starts in his career, and after scoring a hat trick in the B game (Ferdinand scored only one and made the final squad) was still ignored - despite the fact that he is fit and in form. It looks as if Sutton was right to turn down his B game, they don't seem to count for anything. |
