With our imminent trip to Brazil - and the presence of baby sitting grand-parents - we will soon get a night out, and I’m looking forward to seeing the first film of Phillip Pullman’s trilogy. The Golden Compass, based on the book of the same name released in the US, but called the Northern Lights in the UK - The Golden Compass was an early working title to the whole trilogy before His Dark Materials was settled on.
Anyway the film seems to have created quite a bit of media coverage due to its alleged religious (or rather anti-religious) themes, in particular about the fictional religious order who some catholic groups seems to think is based on them. I thought therefore it was a good time to repost a quote from Pullman (on readerville.com) from 2000 when answering questions about his trilogy and also the fact the book’s God dies. I think his post covers what his real views are in relation to the religious order portrayed in the books.
Pullman : My views on religion and science
... That's a long one. In a sense I prefer just to point to the story
and say "There it is." I'll say a brief word about the Authority,
though. The God who dies is the God of the burners of heretics, the
hangers of witches, the persecutors of Jews, the officials who recently
flogged that poor girl in Nigeria who had the misfortune to become
pregnant after having been forced to have sex - all these people claim
to know with absolute certainty that their God wants them to do these
things. Well, I take them at their word, and I say in response that that God deserves to die.
The Authority, then, is an ancient IDEA of God, kept alive artificially
by those who benefit from his continued existence. |
